This summer sees apocalypse, doomsday, interplanetary war and more than a sprinkling of superheroes. This year’s Hollywood spectaculars commence in March with The Host, Stephenie Meyer’s tale where humans are possessed by aliens in a bid to takeover the world. This is quickly followed in April by Oblivion, the latest instalment in the Tron series, starring Tom Cruise.
June sees the release of After Earth featuring Will Smith teaching his son to survive on our abandoned planet and Brad Pitt battles zombies in World War Z. If we have not reached the end of the world just yet Iron Man 3 and Man of Steel pick up on the Superhero theme and we are only just beginning to cover all the apocalyptic movies planned for this year.
If 2013’s run of near death experiences sees you reaching for refreshment, a Death Proof may be a wise choice. This gin-based cocktail is light with rich mix of flavours that sequentially just like this summer’s movies. The slightly more complex mix means that the Death Proof is best enjoyed with company in the cocktail hour.
2cm fresh peeled cucumber
6 to 8 coriander leaves
25ml Giffard Ginger of the Indies
10ml Giffard Gum Syrup
10ml fresh lemon juice
½ an egg white
Place the cucumber in the shaker and fill with ice. Pour in all the ingredients and add the coriander. Shake vigorously until well chilled and then strain into a martini glass. Garnish with coriander.
