Formula One Summer

Looking at the thick blanket of snow covering northern Europe this week it is hard to believe that spring is upon us.  However, a quick glance at the back page of any newspaper tells a different story; the UEFA Champions league is edging toward a Barcelona v Real Madrid final; rugby’s Six Nations championship reaches an intense conclusion as Wales and England fight for glory; and the streets of Melbourne echo to the howls of racing engines as Formula One returns and brings with it the first tantalising glimpse of warmer days.

Just the thought of summer brings with it images of long days at the beach, warm red sunsets and long, cool cocktails.  There is one to match the ambience of every occasion and venue.  Mojito, Old Fashioned, a Manhattan are all great cocktails but for Melbourne this weekend, a Summer Cucumber might be just the thing.  The combination of flavours is perfect for a hot afternoon at the Grand Prix.  First the mint cleans and cools the palate, then the grapefruit cuts through a hot and dusty thirst, while the cucumber refreshes and soothes.  The Summer Cucumber is perfect for lunch or easing into a balmy evening.

2 fresh strawberries

2cm fresh peeled cucumber

1 sage leaf

50ml Giffard Menthe-Pastille

10ml Giffard grapefruit syrup

30ml tonic water

Muddle the strawberries and cucumber into a highball glass.  Fill the glass with ice.  Pour in each ingredient and stir until well chilled.  Enjoy!
